Christmas in Plains by Jimmy Carter
I just finished up Christmas in Plains, the brief but very enjoyable memoir of the 39th president’s lifetime of Christmases. We start out in Carter’s childhood, in which his Christmases were quaint celebrations of familial togetherness (not without the innocent materialism of Santa’s gifts!) through his years in public office to role as patriarch in semi-retirement. Though each period of his life is celebrated differently, the thread of love remains throughout. Though this memoir is focused on the holiday season, one garners a great deal of knowledge on the character of the former president. He is a man of peace who commands respect through his ability to demonstrate the warmth of his character. This book is a great way to get into the holiday spirit!
